Keeping a Synchronicity Journal:
Paying Attention and Listening to Spirit - A Real Eye Opener!

If you're really serious about connecting to Spirit, I strongly urge you to do this activity.  Ask a friend or partner to do this with you and compare notes for even greater effect.

Have you ever paid close attention to the coincidences that occur in your life?  Maybe you were thinking of a friend you haven't spoken to in a while and suddenly your phone rings and it's that friend!

Or perhaps you were thinking you wanted to learn more about a specific subject and you notice an ad for a workshop or a friend recommends a book on that very subject!

Many authors, scientists and spiritual gurus have taught us that there are no such things as coincidences, but rather only signs from Spirit gently nudging us into a direction we should look into.  These are called synchronicities - almost like your angels are aligning the steps you need to take to begin a new avenue in your journey.

Synchronicity: "A term coined by Carl Jung to denote meaningful coincidence. Events bound by synchronicity are connected by similarity, by meaning, by resonance, rather than by causality. Synchronicity is an acausal connecting principle. Since it goes beyond causation, it goes beyond time and space, and is not limited by such relations."
Dr. Michael Picard, PhD

Keep a journal and begin to notice everything, no matter how small it may seem.  Spirit doesn't always beat us on the head to get our attention -usually it's more subtle than that, like a tap on the shoulder, or a whisper in our ear.  Sometimes I feel a 'zing' going up my spine when I see or feel a synchronistic moment.  Paying attention to these happenings helps us to open up to Spirit and feel more connected.

Have fun with this!  You don't have to believe in any specific philosophy or school of thought to appreciate this.

Writing Prayers

I took this activity from
Spirituality in Everyday Life: An Adult Religious Education Course
Unitarian Universalist Church

Many religions have variations on chanting or repetitive prayers.  I like this method because it uses your unconscious to form the prayers.

Without spending any time on the answers, write down the first association that comes to you as you read the unfinished sentences.  Don’t think; just write.  There are no right, wrong, or profound answers.  We will be using the words to form a prayer that comes from your unconscious rather than your conscious brain.

Write down the first thing that comes to mind.

If I were a season I would be…
If I were a time of day I would be…
If I were a color I would be…
If I were a geometric shape I would be…
If I were a word of praise I would be…
If I were a religious hero I would be…
If I were something to touch, I would be…
If I were an animal, I would be…
If I were a precious stone, I would be…
If I were an element, (fire, earth, air, water) I would
be…
If I were a kind of weather I would be…
If I were a sound, I would be…
If I were a religious object I would be…
If I could be anyplace in the world I would be…
If I were a musical instrument I would be…
If I were a piece of music or song, I would be…
If I were a flower, I would be…
If I could choose only one quality it would be (like gentleness, humor)…
I long for…
If I could be a taste, I would be…
If I could be an action I would be…
If I could be anyone in the world I would be…
If I were a food would be...

Instructions:

  • Without thinking, circle some of your answers (between one-third & one-half).
  • Look at the ones you have circled and make a second circle around some of them.
  • Give the ones you have circled twice a number, without any rhyme or reason for the order (1,2,3, and so on).
  • Write out those words in the order you have numbered them, each on a separate line.
  • Finally, add any connecting words between these words that you like (the, an, to, from,  ---ing, a verb, or whatever comes to you.  If you want, you can alter the final version to suit you.)
  • Give the prayer a title.
  • Read it out loud, if you like.
  • Use your prayers for meditation or share with your family.

Here are my prayers.  I chose to use a theme for each prayer based on the Four Seasons & Four Elements:

Earth
My feet are anchored in the rich soil. Mother Earth gives rise to my hope,
As the grass pushes up
Without struggle or hesitation.

Fire
Father Sun emblazes my spirit
With his light and sets my soul
With fiery passion.

Air
On the wings of angels I am lifted.
My spirit is softened
With the gentle winds of gratitude.

Water
The chill of the season
Pulls me closer to home.
And like delicate snowflakes,
I find a soft place to fall.
Spring
Springing forth from the depths of my soul Are loving reminders from Mother Goddess That peace, like a flame, is burning from within.

Summer
The soft midnight breeze,
Like comforting arms enfold me.
The lily blooms open
To reveal her lovely fragrance of joy.

Autumn
Bittersweet is the moment;
A grateful heart sings out.
The autumn leaves trickling around me.
My ancestral spirits whisper their hearts desire through the course of my veins.

Winter
The flute softly plays her lullaby.
I am quieted to sleep with precious dreams.
Soaring on the wings of love
My Goddess kisses me to sleep.

My 10 Commandments
